Canada pushes protection of Arctic waters

Canada wants to stop ships from discharging oily waste or garbage anywhere in northern waters, according to documents obtained by the Canadian Press news agency. Canada proposed tough anti-pollution rules during negotiations for a mandatory shipping code in the Arctic.

The proposal has won the support of countries like France and Germany which have been critical of Canada’s stance on other environmental issues such as climate change and the management of polar bears and seals. (ld)
