Newspapers want to know why Canadian government not advertising with them

Listen

Canadian newspapers say the federal government is only using 10 percent of its entire advertising budget on newspapers. They want to know why, and they’re using advertising and meetings with MPs to get their point across.

A full page ad in the April 29 edition of Ottawa’s The Hill Times sums it up: “In the last week, 4 out of 5 Canadians read a newspaper. So why doesn’t the Government of Canada advertise with us?”

On Tuesday (April 30) representatives of daily, weekly, and community papers will go to Ottawa to meet with Members of Parliament to get some answers.

Newspapers Canada, an initiative of the Canadian Newspaper Association and the Canadian Community Newspapers Association, is organizing the meetings.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Jim Hinds, the CEO of Newspapers Canada.
