Canada’s foreign affairs minister, John Baird, plans to press Russia to change a controversial anti-gay law that imposes fines for spreading information about gay choices to minors and bans gay pride rallies.
Mr. Baird says he is “deeply concerned” that Russia’s sports minister has indicated the law will be enforced during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Mr. Baird says he is worried the new law may incite violence against gays because it breeds hate and says Canada is working behind the scenes to persuade Russia to repeal the law. He added that that Canadian officials have a held meetings on the matter with Russian authories this year.
Mr. Baird said he is working with his US and British counterparts to convince Moscow to change it.
