Funeral for honeymooner killed in Mexico

On the first day of her honeymoon in Mexico, Canadian Shannon Amy Guy died after the glass panel on a balcony collapsed on October 16. The 24 year-old mother of two was posing for a photo with another Canadian couple while her new husband, Paul Guy was taking the picture.

Mexican police said a similar incident killed a woman two years ago at the same hotel, the Oasis Tulum, south of Cancun. The wing where the couple was staying had not passed safety requirements, according to the public broadcaster, CBC.

Many Canadians go to Mexico and the Caribbean for vacations, especially to escape the cold in winter. There have been several troubling incidents in Mexico where Canadian travellers have lost their lives.

Other deaths in Mexico

A Canadian teenager was struck and killed by a water scooter in July. A rogue wave took the life of another that same month. In January one young man fell off a balcony after an apparent fight. Another died near the same time under mysterious circumstance. In such cases, Canadian foreign affairs officials help the families bring their loved ones home.

The funeral for Guy was held yesterday in Carleton Place, Ontario and the family asked people to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society in her name.
