Canada’s environment department says the country will come nowhere near meeting its targets for greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. In fact, its own report finds Canada is actually slipping backwards.
Canada committed to cutting emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels at the last international climate change meeting in Copenhagen. Instead emissions from the extraction of oil from bitumen will increase from an estimated 34 million tonnes in 2005 to 101 million tonnes in 2020.
Emissions produced by vehicles and electricity sector are expected to drop. But overall Environment Canada predicted national GHG emission will total 734 megatonnes in 2020 rather than the 607-megatonne target.
Environmental groups castigate Canadian government
Environmental groups says the report is indicative of the Canadian government’s poor policies on emissions and that reductions are more a product of efforts made by various provincial governments.
