More foreign caregivers will get residency

Foreign caregivers and nannies living with Canadian families will have more chances of getting permanent residency in 2014.  Such people are allowed to apply for permanent residency after two years’ work, but there is a backlog of 45,000 applications which takes about five years to work through.

New measures to address the backlog will almost double the number of approvals to 17,500 next year, says Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander.

Alexander said “live-in caregivers participating in the program came here with the promise of permanent residency after meeting work obligations in looking after the children, elderly or disabled people in their care. We need to honour our commitment to them.”
