“The government needs to step to the plate” and deal with the problems facing veterans, says Gordon Moore, the Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion, in a pragmatic voice hoping for a change.
In general, the Legion is concerned about the impact of government cutbacks on the support given to Canada’s war veterans.
Specifically, the Legion has three priority issues: a pension clawback when a veteran reaches the age of 65, the disability award to an injured veteran which does not match average civilian worker’s compensation payouts, and the even worse treatment of reservists.
Moore says much of the cost cutting goes back decades, and says the accumulated impact is being particularly felt now.
Apart from lobbying the government for changes, the Legion actively supports veterans needing help with a telephone help line 1-877-534-4666, and Can We Help page on their website www.legion.ca/can-we-help.
