Ontario will ban candy-flavoured tobacco

Legislation will ban candy and fruit-flavoured tobacco products in the province of Ontario, as part of on-going efforts in Canada to reduce tobacco use, particularly among young people. Flavoured tobacco products are one of the few remaining way tobacco companies can legally market to youth and the Ontario government believes many start smoking with cigarillos that taste like chocolate or strawberry.

The law would also ban smoking on restaurant and bar patios as well as on playgrounds and on sports fields. Laws already exist banning smoking inside buildings.

Provinces increasingly restrict tobacco use in a bid to prevent cancer and other illnesses caused by it.  Several provinces have also sued tobacco companies to try to recover related health care expenses.
