Increasing concern about antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Listen

For Dr Mark Joffe, and many others dealing with infectious diseases, the problem is serious, and growing: “We are looking…at more and more antibiotic-resistant bacteria that will be difficult to treat with antibiotics.”

In addition, according to Dr Joffe, there’s the huge impact of antibiotics used in non-human situations, like livestock, for food.

As the President of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infections Disease Canada (AMMI) Dr Joffe represents physicians, clinical microbiologists and researchers. They’re concerned, gathering data on resistant microbes in Canada, and hoping the public will become aware of the growing challenge ahead.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Dr Mark Joffe about their concerns, and the challenges of getting governments to react.
