A controversial pipeline project that would take oil from the western Canadian province of Alberta to the Pacific coast province of British Colombia was given the go-ahead by the “Joint Review Panel for the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project”. The panel received its mandate from Canada’s Minister of the Environment and the National Energy Board, an independent federal agency.
The approval hinges on 209 required conditions, including developing a marine mammal protection plan, researching heavy oil cleanup and conducting emergency response exercises.
The recommendation comes after more than a year of hearings in both provinces.
The Northern Gateway Project has been contested by environmental groups and Indigenous communities.
