Patrick Chan had Canadians watching today

Patrick Chan had his heart set on a medal today, wanting to be the first Canadian man to win Olympic skating gold.  He is coming home with silver.

Many Canadians found television sets to watch the event in the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia.  But a couple of errors kept Chan, the three-time world champion behind Japan’s 19 year-old Yuzuru Hanyu, who took the gold.

Yuzuru Hanyu trains in Toronto with his Canadian coach, Brian Orser, a two-time Olympic silver winner himself.

Patrick Chan, 23, conceded his disappointment and as a true-Canadian he apologized to the country.  Canadians, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, quickly tweeted back their pride in his silver performance.

Chan went on to thank the hockey coach who told him to learn how to figure skate before pursuing hockey when he was a boy.

Denis Ten of Kazakhstan won the bronze.
