Advisers warn more action needed on climate change

Top advisers to the government of Canada say it needs to do more to combat climate change and manage its risks, reports Postmedia News. The agency has obtained a report prepared by deputy ministers for Canada’s top bureaucrat, Wayne Wouters, clerk of the Privy Council. The Privy Council is made up of former government ministers and others who directly advise the prime minister and his cabinet.

The report says Canada will likely face “significant challenges to mitigate GHG emissions beyond 2020” in particular because of its focus on energy and exports. It also raises questions as to why the current Conservative government has been slow to introduce emissions rules for the energy industry even though senior civil servants have been raising concerns.

Postmedia obtained the report through Canada’s Access to Information law.
