Company fined for deadly accident

A 56-year-old man was crushed to death between a locomotive and a forklift in Montreal last September, and a workplace safety board has blamed his company, Bombardier.

Canada, its provinces and territories have bodies responsible for making sure workplaces are safe and workers are healthy. In this case, the Quebec workplace health and safety board investigated the accident that happened when a supervisor and two technicians used a forklift to try to move a locomotive out of a workshop and into a yard.

The board concluded a forklift is not designed for this use and fined Bombardier for using a dangerous practice. The amount was not made public, but the range for such an offense is between $15,698 and $62,790. The board banned all companies from using forklifts to move trains in future.
