The number of aboriginal women murdered or missing in Canada is much higher than previously thought according to a new compilation of figures from police departments across the country. Nearly 1,200 women have been struck in the past 30 years. That’s three to four times more than the average number of women who go missing or are killed.
Native groups and other advocates have for years demanded a public inquiry into this issue. As late as Thursday, May 1st, the Canadian government rejected that demand.
“This crisis has gone on for far too long,” said opposition Member of Parliament Niki Ashton in the House of Commons.
