‘The Grand Seduction’ opens in Canadian cinemas

The Grand Seduction‘, the english version of Quebec’s popular 2003 film, ‘La Grande Seduction’, opened in Canadian cinemas today.

It’s the same story, with a few tweaks, in a different location.  The people of the little fishing village, lure a doctor into spending a month with them, hoping he will stay, and provide them the opportunity to lure a bigger catch, in the petrochemical plant that will bring jobs, jobs, jobs.

“I must say I was really titillated by doing a remake of a Quebecois film,” director Don McKellar told CBC News.  “These successful Quebecois films, if they work, usually it’s because it’s a solid comic premise.”

The film got a very warm reception when it screened at TIFF in September 2013.  It features several much-loved Canadian stars including Gordon Pinsent, Mary Walsh, Cathy Jones and Mark Critch, as well as Irish actor Brendan Gleeson.  Canadian Taylor Kitsch plays Dr. Lewis, with Liane Balaban as the feisty Kathleen.

Filming, in the Trinity area of Newfoundland and Labrador, took place over two-years.
