Saputo, a major cheese company is no longer buying milk from farm where eight employees were caught on video beating cattle. The group, Mercy for Animals Canada released an undercover video last week, showing dairy cows being cruelly abused at Chilliwack Cattle Sales, Canada’s largest dairy farm located in the western province of British Columbia.
Besides it being against the law to abuse animals, most Canadians abhor cruelty to animals and 100,000 people signed a petition calling for Saputo to take action.
The owner of the farm, Jeff Kooyman, said he was unaware of the abuse and couldn’t understand why the workers would do it. He fired them and vowed to install video cameras in his barns so he could ensure his animals are well-treated. Authorities are considering laying charges against the abusers.
In 2008, Chilliwack Cattle Sales was cleared of charges relating to the transport of injured cows.
