Controversial oil pipeline project gets approval from Canadian government

Listen

A controversial oil pipeline project which would bring oil to Canada’s Pacific coast across the province of British Columbia received conditional approval from the Canadian government Tuesday (June 17) despite continuing protests and court challenges.

The Northern Gateway Project of Enbridge Inc would transport 525,000 barrels per day of oil for export from the oilsands of the western province of Alberta across the province of British Columbia to ports on the the Pacific coast.

A federal review panel recommended approval of the project if 209 conditions were met. The Canadian government now has approved the pipeline, if the company fulfils the conditions.

Before this decision, the province of British Columbia had insisted five conditions be met including consultation with Indigenous peoples and a fair share of the revenues for the province.

On Wednesday, in the House of Commons Question Period, almost all attention was focused on demanding the government explain its approval.
