Government vetoes opposition tour of flood efforts

The minister of defence has vetoed a plan for the leader of the opposition to tour efforts to hold back devastating floods in the western province of Manitoba. Leader of the New Democratic Party Tom Mulcair was to visit a military command post for a briefing on sandbagging operations with the blessing of the premier of the province and the military commander in charge.

Mulcair only needed final approval from the minister of defence who refused and wouldn’t say why. You could argue a political visit would interfere with operations but there were no qualms in letting the prime minister take a helicopter tour on Sunday.

“It’s disheartening to see the Conservatives play politics during a crisis,” said Mulcair spokesman George Smith.
