P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association sign $17 million deal with China

The P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association is one of the big winners on the recent trade mission to China, in the company of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The newly formed fair trade lobster brand, signed a C$17 million, three-year deal to sell 2.5 million pounds (1.1 million kg) of raw, blanched lobster to the Lanesync Supply Chain over three years.

Craig Avery, the acting association president, said, “For one company, that’s a very significant purchase,” explaining that the annual lobster catch on P.E.I. is about 30 million pounds (13.6 million kg.)

Avery told CBC News, “We’re looking for companies that are looking for a fair trade so that fishermen get a good price, and processors can make money, and consumers get a good value product.

P.E.I. signed deals earlier this fall to ship lobster to France and Belgium.

Meanwhile, Alibaba, described as Asia’s answer to Amazon, set a target to sell 200,000 Canadian lobster today.

No word yet on how the on-line sale is going, but officials from Alilbaba will meet representatives of the P.E.I Fishermen’s Association on Saturday.
