Study: Canadian government budget cuts are permanent, dramatic and hit services to citizens

Canadian government attempts to balance the federal budget with cuts have reduced services to veterans, lowered the number of employees dealing with food inspection, and generally cut direct services to citizens, according to a new study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released on Wednesday (November 12).

In addition, the study “At What Cost? The Impacts of Rushing to Balance the Budget” by David Macdonald and Kayle Hatt, found the federal government cuts have not been small. Instead of announcing large cuts at one time, the government has implemented the cuts on top of each other in successive budgets. The cumulative effect by 2015-16 will be $14.5 billion of cuts a year.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda discussed the findings of the study with Kayle Hatt, an Associate Researcher at the CCPA.
