Express Entry programme for new immigrants

Canada’s federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration has announced the coming into force of a new immigration programme called “Express Entry”

The programme is designed to allow people with the skills to succeed in Canada, to complete their immigration much faster.

The progamme allows those who want to apply to Canada’s key economic immigration programmes to create an online profile detailing their interest in coming to Canada permanently.

After meeting the minimum criteria, those accepted into the pool will be ranked according to various factors. These include language proficiency, education and work experience. Each is a leading indicator of one’s likelihood of integrating fully and quickly into Canada’s economy and Canadian society.

Those among the highest ranking skilled workers will be invited to apply for permanent residency, and their applications will rapidly processed with the government promising a time frame of six months or less. The first invitations are expected to be sent out at the end of this month.

The Express Entry programme is designed to quickly identify those who are most likely to succeed in Canada instead of processing applications on a “first come- first served” basis.  The government says it will also enable more flexibility and faster response to changing labour market needs.

Candidates who have been invited to apply for permanent residence will need to complete the immigration process, which includes health and security checks.

Express Entry will manage applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class.

Provinces and Territories will be able to use the Express Entry system to select a portion of candidates for their Provincial Nominee Programs.
