Campaign to preserve massive ‘bird nursery’

Bird and nature conservation groups are lobbying to save at least half of the massive forest that stretches across the northern part of North America. This boreal forest is a crucial habitat for spring and summer nesting for an estimated three billion birds. That’s nearly half of all the bird species in the United States and Canada.

Several groups want the Canadian and U.S. governments to protect at least half of the forest from industrial development. Past research suggested preserving ten per cent of the forest was needed to protect nesting songbirds. But newer conservation science and modelling show that protection of half the area is necessary.

The boreal forest has some valuable oil, gas and mineral deposits. In Canada, is it largely publicly owned and managed by governments, aboriginal groups or industry. Conservationists suggest the key to conserving such a large area is to forge partnerships among these groups.

Many songbird species are already in decline or considered endangered. Scientists say protecting their habitat is critical to saving them.
