Thousands of post-secondary students in the Canadian province of Quebec boycotted classes and went on strike on Monday (March 23). The Comité Printemps 2015 [“Spring Committee 2015”] is planning demonstrations each Saturday, such as a rally on March 21 which had thousands marching through the city of Montreal.
Student protests in the spring of 2012 led to the provincial government in Quebec backing down on tuition increases, and to the eventual defeat that autumn of the government.
The province’s student movement has wide support from labour unions and others concerned by the provincial government’s austerity measures.
