Once again this year, an exceptionally cold and long winter is causing normally very shy lynx to approach towns in northern Ontario searching for food.
In one case a rather relaxed lynx is seen in the town of Terrace Bay on the shores of Lake Superior.
However, another incident further to the west in the village of Dinorwic earlier this month was far less relaxed.

John Cox said he was at the kitchen window while his pet goat “Stella” was outside, when he saw a lynx enter the yard.
The lynx leapt on the goat’s back, and Cox ran to get his rifle.

On opening the door to get a shot.. the terrified goat with lynx on its back ran into the house tearing around knocking everything over, In the noise and chaos , Cox said he put the rifle safety on and then hit the cat several times with the butt to knock it off the goat.
The lynx then tried to escape towards a window, breaking glass and objects on the window ane sill before the now bleeding lynx turned on Cox. He knocked it unconscious with another swipe of the rifle butt. He then put the goat outside and in order to protect himself and his daughter from the cat, said he had to shoot it.

He later said he was surprised at the size of a lynx. “When you see a cat out in the bush, you look at it and say, ‘gee, that’s a big cat,” Cox said. “But when you see that cat in your living room and you’re comparing it to a couch and a chair, it is a very big cat. It’s head came to above my hip.”
He adds the Stella has now recovered from her wounds.
