Plan for terminal cancelled to protect whales

TransCanada Corporation has confirmed it no long plans to build a terminal on the St. Lawrence River at Cacouna in eastern Canada. The company says it made the decision in part because of concern for beluga whales.

Protesters had voiced concern that the area was used as a nursery for the whales, whose numbers have dwindled to about 1,000. St. Lawrence belugas are listed as threatened under Canada’s Species at Risk Act.

The company says it will look for an alternative location for a marine and tank terminal as part of its Energy East pipeline project.
