Time to re-open the eastern cod fishery?

It’s time to reopen the cod fishery off Canada’s eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador, say some people involved in the fishing industry there. The fishery was once the most productive in the world but was shut down in 1992 when fish stocks collapsed, mostly because of overfishing.

This caused real hardship in the province’s many fishing villages dotted along the coast.

Now, the province’s fishermen’s union, some processors and harvesters say the stocks are recovering. They want a test fishery set up in an area from Labrador to the Avalon Peninsula. It’s hoped positive results would enable a limited commercial fishery off the northeast coast of Newfoundland.
