Bono goes to Ottawa seeking more aid for the poor

Fresh from two giant shows over the weekend in Montreal–with two more to come this week–U2 frontman and humanitarian activist Bono was in Ottawa on Monday to meet with the leaders of Canada’s three main federal parties and several non-profit organizations.

Bono is expected to focus on securing more material and child health aid projects in Africa, issues Prime Minister Stephen Harper has addressed at the United Nations and for which he has pledged $3.5 billion.

The Irish singer requested the meeting with Mr. Harper, who refused to meet with Bono at a 2007 G8 meeting in Germany saying, “Meeting celebrities isn’t my shtick.”

The leader of the Official Opposition, Thomas Mulcair, is expected to discuss ONE, Bono’s organization that aims to end extreme poverty around the world.

A Liberal Party spokesman did not say what would be on the agenda of Bono’s meeting with party leader Justin Trudeau.

This is the not the first time Bono has been Ottawa seeking financial aid for his causes.

In 2003, he was the keynote speaker at the Liberal convention that elected Paul Martin as leader.

Bono also appeared with Mr. Martin during an HIV/AIDS symposium in 2004 in Ottawa.
