Politicians march in gay pride parade

Political leaders from all parties and all levels of government braved the cold and drizzle to take part in Toronto’s 35th annual Pride parade in Toronto on Sunday. The city’s Mayor John Tory marched, where his predecessor Rob Ford routinely snubbed the event while he was in office.

The provincial leader, Premier Kathleen Wynne is gay herself and marched as did the leaders of three federal opposition parties who face election in October.

The colourful parade also included celebrities like Elton John’s husband David Furnish who is from Toronto, Cyndi Lauper, members of Pussy Riot and Indian gay rights supporter Celina Jaitly.

Don’t move to Canada

The mood may have been particularly jubilant given last week’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that same-sex American couples have a constitutional right to marry.  There were reports that disgusted Americans furious with the court ruling tweeted that they should move to Canada.

This caused much hilarity and supported the common view that Americans know little about Canada, in this case that same-sex marriage has been legal here for a decade.
