Fantasia is up and running on several screens in down town Montreal with something for almost everyone. Programmer Ariel Estaban Cayer says they begin in January and Februray lining up, what people will be lining up for in July.
ListenSeveral of the 135 features and 300 shorts from 36 countries this year are already sold out with friends and fans of the festival coming from far and wide. For some it’s the opportunity to share the experience of seeing amazing genre film in the company of other fans, and often, some of their heroes.
This year one of the big celebrities arriving is Kevin Bacon in a terrifying turn in ‘Cop Car‘. It was directed and co-written by Jon Watts, who has since been named director for the next ‘Spiderman‘ movie.
The festival will be the occasion for the Canadian première of the live-action version of the Japanese manga/anime hit ‘Attack on Titan’, which closes the festival August 4th.
There is an animated adaptation of Kahlil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet’, which screened at Cannes last year and a trio of new films by prolific Japanese director Sion Sono;
Ken Ochiai’s, ‘Ninja the Monster’, described as a blend of “historical facts, adventure film and fantastic cinema” will be a world premier. And there’s ‘Orion’, the post-apocalyptic mythical fantasystarring David Arquette, and, ‘Who Killed Captain Alex?’, which is being billed as “Uganda’s first action movie”.
Then there’s the Israeli horror film Jeruzalem; and a special screening of Marvel’s Ant-Man. It will be interesting to see what they line-up for the 20th anniversary edition.
