Robert Lepage grew up in Quebec City, which is still his home, in a family that was divided between French and English, both politically and practically. His older brother and sister went to an English school, he and his younger sister went to French school.
Now a recognized theatre treasure the world over, Robert Lepage delivered the guest lecture at the Baldwin-Lafontaine Symposium in the fall of 2014. It was presented by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and the Stratford Festival. During an interview for the CBC Radio program ‘Ideas‘, Lepage also shared some of his insights into an evolving Canadian identity.
In this month of July, in which we celebrate Canada Day, the French, one of our founding cultures, celebrate July 14th, Bastille Day, and our big neighbour to the south celebrates their national holiday on July 4th. I excerpted some of what Robert Lepage has to say about this question, or as he said it better, this mystery of identity.
