Outdoor Safety

Canada is known the world over for its expansive stretches of amazing landscapes and waterways. And while we’re blessed with ample opportunity to get out and enjoy the magnificence of nature, people are warning that to really enjoy the experience, you must be prepared.

Lynn Desjardins speaks with Linda Mushanski, regional coordinator for Adventure Smart, in the western province of Saskatchewan. It is a nationally funded, volunteer-staffed organization that gets people ready and aware, of the possibility that the best time, could become the worst.

1.4 million voters outside the country are ineligible to vote in this election

No votes for Ex-pats

The next federal election is going to be decided without the votes of as many as 1.4 million Canadains.  They’ve been disenfranchised by a court ruling, that was eagerly watched by the ruling Conservative government, Stephen Harper’s government decided that Canadians living outside the country for longer than 5 years were no longer eligible to vote. Canadian actor, Donald Sutherland, a passionate Canadian, who cherishes his country home in Quebec, weighed in on the change, but the man who really started it all was the Globe & Mail newspaper’s chief foreign correspondent, Mark McKinnon. Last weekend he wrote a column entitled: “I am a Canadian – but not as much as I used to be” in which he lamented the ruling and its ramifications.

Canada’s ‘Mathletes’ in the top-ten of over 100 countries and Alex Song #1

Canada’s high school Mathematics Team came home from the International Mathematical Olympiad in Thailand this week, with glory and victory to share. With a 9th place standing, out of 104 countries, it is the third top-ten finish in 4 years. And team member, Alex Song, made history by bringing home his 5th gold medal and achieving both a perfect score, and having been the only contestant to complete the two-day test!

Carmel Kilkenny spoke with Team Leader Jacob Tsimerman, associate professor at the University of Toronto, to hear more about the experience and why he continues to coach the teams.
