Halal Hip Hop from Ottawa going viral

The Deen Squad is doing it their way. Halal Hip Hop from Canada’s capital city, is going viral and winning fans, Muslim and non-Muslim, around the world.

Jae Deen (aka Joshua Asare) and Karter Zaher are the duo behind the religious rap. Both born and raised in Ottawa, they’re now a global phenomenon for taking the rap hits and changing the words to reflect the Halal (or holy) approach.

“We do our music to show the world who we are,” Jae Deen tells the CBC’s Ioanna Roumeliotis. “I am proud to be a Canadian. I’m proud to be a Canadian Muslim … My music is showing that ‘Hey, I’m like you, but I go to a mosque and pray.'”

Now the two are working on their own tunes, and trust the fans will follow.  The following is the report by Ioanna Roumeliotis for CBC TV’s news program, The National.
