Keeping roads clear of snow is serious business in Canada and a company contracted to do the work in the province of Ontario has been fined for not doing it properly during two storms last winter.
Part of Carillion Canada’s fine was for failing to clear a major highway during a snow and ice storm last November, resulting in dozens of accidents between the cities of Burlington and Mississauga.
Carillion is paid $87 million a year to maintain certain provincial highways. It has not yet commented on the fines.
The opposition Progressive Conservative Party in the province says the ruling Liberal government lowered road maintenance standards in 2009 to save money, resulting in dangerous driving conditions during and after winter storms.
