Saskatoon, often described as the ‘Paris of the Praries’, is considering how best to help refugees. The city’s Planning, Development and Community Services branch is reviewing a report, presented yesterday, with some very practical suggestions.
One of the ideas proposed is to proclaim Saskatoon, a city that welcomes refugees. Another, is to provide free, or low-cost bus passes for the first year, in an effort to help new arrivals get around the city.
The report also reviewed current measures helping refugees, like the funding of settlement agencies and the Leisure Access program that provides aquatic time and lessons as well as fitness and social programs.
It is also considering programs to raise awareness in the community of the need and the process involved when considering private sponsorship.
