The slogan that launched a thousand quips. We see the side of some sort of a mainly white rectangle box, coloured orange at the right end with a red triangle shape in red covering the bottom of the left front. On the side facing us is the slogan, "There are a number of things to do in Okotoks." Below those words, printed in bold-face, is the world "Okotoks" with what appears to be a tiny blue jay sitting atop the third "o." The word appears to be floating on a blue ribbon, in which the words "Historic Past, Sustainable Future" are written. Below the logo, is written "Okotoks Tourism.ca."

Who needs Madison Avenue!

You never know what’s going to work. Take advertising.

Case in point: Promoting Okotoks, Alberta, a town of 25,000 residents, located a little south of Calgary.

Last month city fathers launched a new tourism campaign.

“There are a number of things to do in Okotoks,” heralded the ads, one of which was photographed on a Calgary transit train and promptly tweeted out to much derision.

But, hey, you never know.

Okotoks officials stood their ground, saying the slogan is actually a tagline a larger campaign and Okotokians are not the least bit offended by the mocking tweets.

Well, whose laughing now?

This week the Chinook Country Tourist Association announced that Okotoks had won its “Municipality of the Year Award.”

The award is presented to a municipality that works together to develop, build, promote and enhance tourism in southwestern Alberta.

Go figure.
