Head editor quits role over election editorial

Respected journalist Andrew Coyne has resigned as editor of editorial and comments at the National Post. He will however stay on as a columnist with the newspaper.

Newspapers in Canada usually run an editorial endorsing a party of their choice before any given election. It is not usual for the head of editorials to also be a columnist. Coyne had wanted to publish a column disagreeing with the Post’s editorial endorsement of the Conservative Party before the October 19th vote.

The company’s senior staff felt the dissenting column would have confused readers and embarrassed the paper, said Coyne on Twitter.

The National Post is owned by Postmedia Network Canada, which also owns several daily newspapers across the country.
