Prime Minister Trudeau greeted newly-arrived Syrian refugees at Pearson International airport in Toronto on Dec. 11. We see Mr. Trudeau, jacketless at the left of the picture, shaking the hand of a young girl dressed in a pink winter coat. She stands between her father (to her right). who wears a light winter jacket, and her mother (to her left), who wears a full-length dark winter overcoat. A younger sister, who we barely see, has been hit by a bout of shyness and hides behind her mother. With the exception of the girl hit with shyness, everyone is smiling, though the girl in the centre does appear slightly bewildered.

Trudeau urges generosity to Syrians in message

Justin Trudeau has delivered his first Christmas message as prime minister, encouraging Canadians to share the generosity of the season with Syrian refugees.

Mr. Trudeau added that he believes Canadians will do just that as the new arrivals cope with their first Christmas season and first winter.

Trudeau’s Liberal government is committed settling 10,000 Syrian refugees by the year’s end and another 15,000 by the end of February. So far, about 1,600 refugees have arrived.

Trudeau also urged Canadians to remember those in the military who can’t be with their families this holiday.

Trudeau, who was born on Christmas Day, 1971, while his father, Pierre, was prime minister, will be celebrating the holiday with his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, his three young children, and his mother, Margaret.
