A sad hockey season ends with a little levity

The storied Montreal Canadiens hockey team met the media at the end of a horrible season and the mood picked up when player P.K. Subban gave team captain Max Pacioretty a big hug, reports Canadian Press.

The media were chattering last week when the players bypassed Subban and voted for Pacioretty as their candidate for a special award for leadership and community involvement. This happened in spite of the fact that Subban donated $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital in the summer of 2015.

In spite of saves like this one by Mike Condon on March 29, 2016, the Montreal Canadiens had a terrible end to the season and did not make the playoffs.

‘That’s a story?’

So, the question was why Subban’s teammates bypassed him and was he not popular with Pacioretty and the other players. Pacioretty laughed noting that Subban had come to his wedding and that he played mini-sticks with his son.

“I think you guys are looking way too far into this,” said Pacioretty.

Subban had a similar view. CP reports he said, “I voted for him, so I don’t know what the big deal is.

‘Do I have to …make out with him?’

“It’s like really? That’s a story? I can say till I’m blue in the face: we like each other, we play together, we respect each other. But what? Do I have to go over there and make out with him? Katia (Pacioretty’s wife) might have a problem with that.

“A hug, that’s as far as I’ll take it.”

Disappointed fans

The team had a stellar beginning of the hockey season with nine straight wins, but things rapidly deteriorated and the team didn’t even make it into the playoffs.

It was disappointing for fans who keep hoping for a return to the days when the Montreal Canadiens won five consecutive Stanley Cup Championships starting in 1956, and then four consecutive wins starting in 1973. The Canadiens have won the cup more often than any other franchise, but have not won it since 1993.
