Canada’s long holiday weekend!

Victoria Day, May 23rd, this year, is always celebrated on the Monday before May 25th. Originally designated to honour Queen Victoria’s birthday on May 24th, 1819, it is now also officially the occasion to celebrate the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II’s, birthday which is April 21st,

The official start to summer in Canada

This is the first long holiday weekend of the summer, even though it is not yet officially summer in Canada, this is the traditional weekend to head to the country and get the cottage, or the camp, or the chalet ready for the summer stays. What people call their country place in Canada, depends on the region.

And for those without a country place, it’s often the weekend of work to get the garden ready with the hope that the last of the frost is behind us.

Many communities have fireworks displays on Saturday or Sunday night, and with good weather in the forcast in many places, it is sure to be a great celebration of whatever one likes best outdoors.

In the province of Quebec, the holiday is known as National Patriot’s Day, and it commemorates the rebellion against British forces in 1837. This occasion often includes marches, music concerts, public speeches, and award ceremonies.
