Canadians are not having as many children as they would like, according to a public opinion survey commissioned by the Christian think tank, Cardus. The average number of children in a family is 2.27. Survey results suggest Canadians would like to have an average 2.76 and the reason they don’t is money.
Most think marriage is positive
About 78 per cent of respondents said marriage had a positive or somewhat positive effect on family life. Asked if it was an outdated institution, 56 per cent disagreed to some extent. Not surprisingly, those between 18 and 29 years old were most likely to agree.
Canadians are very concerned about caring for aging parents. Three-quarters of respondent say it is important, but only one in five think society is doing a good job of helping with this.
