Canada’s Prime Minister now a comic book superhero

Yes, it’s a federal politician as a comic book hero.  The variant cover of issue No.5 of Marvel comics series “Civil War II- Choosing Sides” was released yesterday, (Wednesday).

A limited number of the ‘variant’ issue will feature Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau surrounded by members of the Canadian superhero squad, ‘Alpha Flight’.

The main issue cover features Alpha Flight and Nick Fury.

Portrayed as a boxer, behind Prime Minister Trudeau are the Alpha Flight members, Puck, Aurora, and Sasquatch, while Iron Man is seen with arms folded in the background, seemingly sulking.

The issue is written and drawn by two Toronto-based creators, Chip Zdarsky and Ramon Perez respectively.

In addition to having Canada’s political leader prominentally featured, the two creators also sprinkled many other Canadian references throughout the story including mentioning Canada’s intelligence agency CSIS, (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) and to the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club.

In the story line, the Alpha Flight are called to the Prime Minister’s office to discuss possible action in light of revelations of predictions into the future and whether to launch a “first strike” to prevent the predicted calamities.

Also revealed is that the Prime Minister’s sparring partner for his weekly boxing lessons is none other than Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man.

Both the cover and the boxing scenes are undoubtedly based on a real-life charity boxing match featuring Trudeau, then leader of the Liberal opposition party, and then Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau.

That 3-round match eventually saw Trudeau declared the winner.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time a Canadian Prime Minister has been featured in a comic book, and even more surmising, it was Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau.  He was featured in Marvel’s “Uncanny X-Men” Vol.120 in 1979
