Casareccia supporting earthquake relief in Italy

Pasta Casareccia, the popular Italian eatery in Montreal, is having the first of three Sunday fundraising lunches, to help the people and the places devastated by the recent earthquakes in Italy.

Pina Petraccone, the founder of Pasta Casareccia, is from the area most affected. Her two brothers live in the region, and while they and their families are safe, they’re still sleeping in tents as the aftershocks continue.

Today, and the next two Sundays, she and her two sons will be serving lunch between noon and three p.m. featuring the famous Amatrician sauce. For $25 (Cdn) people will be treated to a feast of the pasta with a salad, a drink and some sweets. All the money collected will go to the Red Cross relief fund at work in the region in Italy.

Petraconne is so saddened to hear that Amatrice, the town she knew well as a young girl, has disappeared. She is hopeful it can be restored in an effort to reclaim the history, and she is doing her part.

Her sons, who now run the restaurant, are doing their part as well. They lead the city’s Vespa Club and are currently restoring a vintage beauty that was donated to the cause. A raffle will be held and the winner announced on the 25th of September.

The Italian amabassador, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, in an interview with the CBC in the wake of the earthquake, had suggested Canadians dine on this dish in an effort to raise money. From Pina Petraccone’s description of the sauce, it won’t be hard to do.
