Comeuppance for creepy clowns

The creepy clown fad has spread from the US, into Canada, and now into Britain, Australia, and elsewhere.

Very occasionally there is something actually nefarious behind the masks, but many who dress up as creepy clowns think it’s a joke.  Usually their “victims” don’t think it’s so funny at all..

Well it’s not quite so funny now for three teens in Ontario. For those who think this whole creepy clown fad has gone too far, this news will come as a bit of “good on you”.

Police in Durham Region to the east of Toronto, Ontario, pulled over a car which had been reported to have been stopping near other drivers and pedestrians in a dangerous manner.  The three occupants all wearing scary clown masks, had either been leaning out the windows or actually leaving the car to scare other drivers or bystanders.  Police arrested the three in Oshawa in the wee hours of the morning last Friday..

A major retail chain, Canadian Tire, has pulled one of its Halloween decorations from the shelves. Although it hadn’t recieved any complaints, it said the decorations were pulled out of *sensitivity to recent pranks*.

Police charged two passengers, a 19-year-old male and 18-year-old female, with causing a nuisance, while the 19-year-old male driver was charged with causing a nuisance, and the more serious charge of careless driving.

So far this month alone, Durham Regional Police have responded to 31 creepy clown calls.

Other police forces have also been dealing with several reports of scary clowns.

They remind people that if police have to engage in a false investigation, those people could be charged under the Criminal Code with public mischief. Carrying or brandishing any kind of weapon would result in much more serious criminal charges of any or all of carrying weapons dangerous to the peace, threatening, or assault.

They also say scaring anyone, especially children, is just wrong.
