Pierre Karl Peladeau and Julie Snyder, in a gown by Jean Paul Gaulthier, and surrounded by family, wave to the crowds following their marriage in Quebec City on Saturday

Peladeau – Snyder wedding in Quebec City

Pierre Karl Peladeau and Julie Snyder got married on Saturday, in a lavish, within limits, wedding, in Quebec City. It was a star-studded affair in the provincial capital, with 400 guests from the entertainment, political and business circles of Quebec.

The millionaire marrying the billionaire

Pierre Karl Peladeau is the former president and CEO of Quebecor, the company his father Pierre Peladeau built. From the initial purchase of a struggling community paper in Montreal. Quebecor is now the number one commercial printer in the world and Pierre Karl is still the controlling shareholder.

When he entered politics, running in the provincial election campaign in 2014, Peladeau’s debut, with a militant fist-pump was widely seen as a divisive moment that cost the Parti Quebecois the election.  He has become the leader of the party since and vows to make Quebec a sovereign nation.

Julie Snyder is a TV producer and host who has had great success in Quebec and some success in France. Local media were describing the event, as the millionaire marrying the billionaire. Her television shows run on his TV network.

The two have been together since 2001, with a brief separation last year, and have two children together,10 year-old Thomas and 6 year-old Romy and 15 year-old daughter Marie, from Peladeau’s first marriage,

The ceremony was officiated by Regis Lebeaume, Mayor of Quebc City, in a former Catholic Church which is now the part of the Musée de l’Amérique francophone. The 400 invited guests included Celine Dion’s mother; Celine Dion appeared in a video message from her commute between Las Vegas where her show opens on August 27th, and the bedside of her ailing husband, Rene Angelil, in Boston.

“This is a party, not the campaign”

The  Mayor of Montreal Dennis Coderre, was  in attendance as was most of the Parti Quebecois. The Bloc Quebecois candidate in the current  federal election campaign, Gilles Duceppe was there, and like most, avoided talk of politics on the occasion. “This is a party, not the campaign,” Duceppe said. “People are kind, but I would have come regardless.” he told reporters.

The family, friends and associates dined on a vegetarian dinner some of which came from the nearby Huron reserve, along with a selection of wines that did not exceed $20 Cdn a bottle.

The groom arrived on a made-in-Quebec tandem bicycle with his son in tow, and the bride, when she finally arrived, keeping all assembled waiting an hour, it was in a white Tesla Model S electric car. She was delayed by several hundred onlookers lining the side walks who greeted the popular television host with chants of “Julie! Julie! Julie!

The gown was by Jean Paul Gaultier, and the couple is honeymooning in an undisclosed location.  Julie Snyder stepped down from the helm of her company in June over a dispute with the provincial government regarding tax credits. There is some speculation this new power couple may be a force to be reckoned with on the political scene.
