First Nations Grand Elder Raymond Robinson ends hunger protest

“This hunger strike was a spiritual fast,” said Grand Elder Raymond Robinson after he ended his hunger protest Monday at midnight (April 8) after five days and 15 hours of not eating, nor drinking.

“Being an elder,” he told RCI, “It is my duty. It is my obligation. In fact, it is all our duty, as people of this world to always aspire to have balance where there is chaos.”

This was not his first hunger protest. Last December he joined Chief Theresa Spence in her hunger fast in Ottawa.

At the heart of these protests, is a continuing concern by First Nation indigenous people that their acquired traditional rights are being taken away by new federal legislation such as the Omnibus Bills C-38 and C-45.

Under the banner of the Idle No More movement, people across Canada have called for a nation to nation discussion on indigenous rights.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Grand Elder Raymond Robinson on Wednesday morning.
