To document some of the challenges facing Indigenous people in Canada, First Nations are collecting data for a Canada-wide study of Indigenous nutrition and traditional food and the impact of affordability and environmental contamination of food.
The “First Nations Food, Nutrition, and Environment Study” (FNFNES) is focussing on the western province of Alberta right now. But data and some findings are already available for the provinces of British Columbia and Manitoba.
First Nation communities, whose members still depend a lot on traditional food from the land, are being affected by increasing levels of environmental pollution. As well, transportation costs can sometimes hike up prices of food necessities by as much as four times.
RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Chief Cameron Alexis about the study. Chief Alexis is the Alberta Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
