A special parliamentary commission in Romania overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would allow the Canadian mining company Gabriel Resources to set up Europe’s biggest open pit gold mine.
The company has been waiting 14 years for approval for the project, but weekly protests in the capital Bucharest and some other cities prompted the Romanian government to set up the commission to assess a draft bill submitted by the government for the approval of the Rosia Montana project.
