Cuts in the military’s budget are having a chilling effect on some of Canada’s cadets.
A $2-million outfitting budget cut means some of the 53,000 cadets will have to recycle and trade used uniforms. They are also being told to forgo military-issue gym gear.
The cutbacks come as a post-holiday surge of recruits is expected in January.
The cadets started the year with a $13-million budget for outfits but in the last several weeks were told to return $2 million.
Expensive parkas were the first item to be banned.
Cadets are being told to acquire their own parkas, as well as their own gym shorts, T-shirts and other workout clothing.
The cuts come as Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party government attempts to get rid of the federal deficit by 2015.
