Leader delays GHG regulations in oil/gas sector

The current Canadian government has promised regulations to limit greenhouse gas emissions in the oil and gas sector, but the prime minister said Tuesday it would be “crazy” to impose them now.

“Under the current circumstances of the oil and gas sector, it would be crazy, it would be crazy economic policy to do unilateral penalties on that sector. We’re clearly not going to do it,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said during the Parliamentary question period.

The falling price of oil is a concern to the current government which is a big promoter of oil sands development in western Canada and the oil and gas sector in general.

The government’s environment department reports that Canada will fail to meet its promise to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from by 17 per cent from 2005 levels by the year 2020, and will fail by a large margin.
