Global warming affects snow clearing policy

All across southern Ontario, Quebec and parts of eastern Canada cities and towns are still recovering from yet another case of rain followed by a cold snap which freezes into ice on top of snow.

The major urban centre of Montreal says it has a great deal of experience and strategies in place for clearing up streets and sidewalks after snow storms, but not with ice.

Executive committee vice-president Harout Chitilian, says climate change is the reason for the drastic temperature changes causing such havoc.

“We’re admitting that the situation is exceptional, but will not be an exception in the coming years because more and more we’re seeing this more often. Therefore we are adjusting in real time how we tackle situations of this nature”, he said.

Due to very icy conditions, some 500 cases of fractures were reported across the city of Montreal alone as people slipped and fell on the icy sidewalks and streets.

He says the city is analyzing how it’s practices cope with these wildly varying conditions and continue to develop new policies as these situations become more frequent in future.
